Afraid of Ondel-ondel
Nefertiti was afraid of giant puppet called Ondel-ondel. Giant puppets typical Betawi music is often accompanied by traditional Betawi, indeed, quite scary, especially for small children.
And until now, Nefertiti would hug me or her mother if she saw Ondel-ondel. Bear hug almost strangle our necks, with her eyes closed as close-meeting. What was she doing, will run regardless of any kind for fear of Ondel-ondel.
And perhaps with fear, each one playing music loud enough, or loud music but irregular, Nefertiti will go directly to us. “afraid … afraid … afraid ondel-ondel” she said, “climb” my body and put her arm around my neck choking.
“No … .. it’s only song” I tried to calm. Nefertiti was still closed her eyes. “No … it’s the song” I repeat what I said. Slowly she opened her eyes, turning her neck to the sound source. “No … it’s not ondel-ondel” she said. “It’s okay” She said self-soothe.
